The India Association of Greater Boston, founded in 1962, is the premier Indian-American organization in New England, representing immigrants from the Indian subcontinent and their progeny living in Greater Boston, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the states of New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
IAGB is one of the oldest and secular Indian-American organizations in New England. In its early years, the Association had played a major role in bringing together a small, but growing, Indian-American community by celebrating the festivals of India, by organizing musical events, by screening Bollywood movies, and so on. Over the decades, IAGB has also encouraged the children and the youth to uphold the cultural heritage of their forebears by organizing cultural programs.
While IAGB has been celebrating India’s Independence Day (India Day) and the Republic Day anniversaries for decades, in recent years these events have grown into mega melas, drawing a wide cross section of the Indian and American communities. Today’s India Day celebration at the Hatch Memorial Shell, for example, is one of the largest ethnic events in the city of Boston—drawing over 12,000-strong audience from all walks of life and parts of the Commonwealth and its environs.
IAGB is able to organize these grand events because of the dedication and hard work of the officers and directors of the Association, the commitment of countless number of volunteers, and the overwhelmingly enthusiastic support and active participation of scores of the Indian-American organizations of Greater Boston.
